The SIU recreational soccer program is for children ages 4-16. We provide the opportunity for all children of any skill level to learn and play soccer. We focus on FUN! Players learn about good sportsmanship, teamwork, and get great exercise. All team members play at least half of every game. There are no cuts or tryouts. Each child receives a uniform. Players provide shin guards, a ball, and a water bottle. It is run totally by parent volunteers.
SIU registers approximately 550-700 children each season and we rely completely on parent coaches. We will set as many teams as possible based on the number of parent volunteer coaches and field availability. If you would like to be a coach or an asst. coach please contact the Rec Registrar at firstname.lastname@example.org. It’s a great, no pressure opportunity to have fun with kids in your community.
Individual coaches schedule practices. As a guideline, we suggest 1-2 practices a week maximum for children six years old and up. Each team will be scheduled to play eight games during the season. Games (for 6 years and younger) are played on Saturdays at the Community Park on Grantline Road. The 4 and 5 year olds have practice and games on the same nights. Practice is from 6-6:30pm and the game is from 6:30 –7:00pm. The 4 year olds play on Mondays and the 5 year olds play on Thursdays.
The SIU soccer year is from fall to spring just like school. Players will stay with the same coach they had for the fall and spring seasons provided that they register on time. All vacancies this spring will be filled by newcomers at random by the Registrar. The Registrar randomly places four and five year old teams. The children of coaches and asst. coaches will be placed with their parents. Parents will be contacted by their child’s prior to the start of games.
